Last night I broke a memory wide open. It was a simple slip of the foot – I knocked something into it a bottle of Kourtaki that had been in the pantry for 20 years. Even with its neck broken, I couldn’t throw it away. I strained the wine to eliminate cut glass and tasted the memories. Retsina! Nights together in Athens!
Savoring the distinct flavor I lived again me travel mates birthday. A Greek took us took us out to celebrate. It began with a lovely dinner and serenade. Then a wonderful concert of Theodorakis works. i remember the feeling of being enfolded in the culture as the audience sang along to songs – familiar to them and exotic to us. The strip joint that followed was too much for us and we were delivered back to our hotel, the Acropolis House. Panos, our host, wasn’t on nights and I wish I remembered the night clerk’s name. He poured the Metaxa and made Mary feel loved and important.
She was my lifetime BFF before the term was invented. I drink to you, Mary. Friend of my best life. Traveling companion extraordinaire! Confidante! May you live forever in eternity as you live in my heart – beloved.
